Tips and Tricks for Painting Your Vehicle at Home
Some vehicle enthusiasts love to take car projects into their own hands. From starting at square one to putting on the last coat of paint, doing things yourself can be rewarding for some individuals. Painting a vehicle can be tedious and hard work, so take a look at a few of our tips and tricks to make it easier along the way.
Vehicle Painting Tips and Tricks
- Properly Prepare – Before you do anything, you need to make sure you have everything prepared. Clean your working area so it’s free of floating dust or debris, mark off your areas, have your paint and supplies ready, and if you are painting outside, be sure that you aren’t painting under any trees. Some painters like to soak the floor with water beforehand to keep all dirt and debris stuck to the floor.
- Take Your Time – Don’t rush this! It’s important to have proper spraying techniques or you run the risk of the coat looking uneven or spotty. Hold the spray gun approximately 6 inches from the panel and practice spraying in a side-to-side sweeping motion until you feel confident in your abilities.
- Use 3 to 4 Coats – Be sure to use at least 3 coats of paint and follow the recommended drying time specified on the paint can. After applying the last coat, remove any residue and finish with a clear-coat lacquer.
